Both Gateway and ODBC will (generally) work, but sometimes with some quirks
and problems, probably more from the Excel end, than from the R:BASE end.

Sometimes I've had the best luck when I've exported the Excel data as an ASCII
file and then loaded the ascii data into R:Base.  (When you're in Excel use
the SAVE AS command, select TEXT as your "Save As Type", and name the file
anything you want.)
