I've neve puzzled out all the subtleties of this issue.  I know it works
under certain circumstances -- probably related to the VERIFY setting, and
whether you are in MULTI on or not.  Specifically, you might be able to do
this with VERIFY set to COLUMN, if you are careful not to allow the UPDATED
columns to appear on the form (at least, in an editable format).  If you
have any insight on when this sort of operation is allowed, I would be happy
to hear it -- I've run into trouble enough times to have put it on my
"techniques to avoid" list (and there has always been at least one other way
to achieve what I was trying to do).

But even if it works, I would be a little wary.  I would be worried that
this falls into the grey area of "undefined behavior" that is subject to
change in the future.
