Tom, Mike, JPG images seem _to work_ for me, too - it was only the flash past by the error/warning message that made me sit up and take notice. There appears to be little (that I could find) in the documentation on the subject of images.
Before I get too far down one road or the other it would be nice to know what is meant to work (and, yes, I do know it's the weekend so I wasn't expecting a response from anyone at RBTI until tomorrow at the earliest).
