As you know bitmaps are huge and take up a lot of
memory if you want to use a graphical interface or
graphic buttons. My solution is to use rle
compression to reduce bitmap size without the JPEG
artifacting. Using shareware like Paint Shop Pro, I
set up a batch conversion to rle (a cross-compatible
subset of the bitmap format). I then rename the the
rle's to bmp's in rbase and import into the database
for use as varbit varables in forms and reports.

RLE works best of images with a lot of solid color.
Gradients and photos are best left to jpeg. One issue
is that if your users are running in 256 color mode,
you have to set up a standard 256 color pallette which
could lead to some color loss in the graphics.
