http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/ is indeed free, and it works very well!
I'm running a small network at home, and I have the two basement systems
running VNC host software. I can access them from upstairs (3rd floor).

I have a linksys firewall, but haven't tried opening it to an external
viewer. (Once someone comes in they can access everything in the house.)
It does require a couple of ports to be opened in the firewall. (5900?)

VNC has a host and a client stub. Client stub does NOT have to be
"installed"
(no registry entry). In the past I've just mapped to the system/drive
that contains the viewer and launched the client window from there.

I have successfully used it between two computers on either side of the
ocean to provide PCAnywhere level of support.

Dennis -

I just visited the GoToMyPc.com website - it's really interesting. Can you
do any file transfer from the host to the remote?

I am using a service called gotomypc.com. I run a
small host service on my office PC, then from any
Internet site I hit a URL which shows my PC desktop.
It gets through firewalls which is a big plus.

The advantage over PCAnywhere is that I don't have to
be running the app on the remote side. It's about
$20/month per PC.
