Richard, Not knowing what all your data will look like, a possible easy solution would be to replace the period AND a space with a space. I.E.
Update Person set FirstName = (SRPL(FirstName,'. ',' ',0)) Where FirstName contains '.' The second arguement is a period and a space while the third arguement is just a space. This will work if all the periods you want to remove have a space behind them.
