if I laugh. it's only at all of the times I fought it, and felt like a 
blooming idiot!!!
My solution was:

set var vFile = 'FileName1234'
Run .vFile

Or

Run 'FileName1234

The quotation marks work with spaces in Win2k as well, i.e.
cd 'Master Database'

The key is the quotation marks, which makes RBase know it's a text field, so 
it doesn't concantenate it.
