Assuming nothing has changed with the network, and R:base itself is running 
slower, I would reload the database to start with.  This will rebuild all of 
the indexes and recompute all of the query optomizer information.

Try setting the variable microrim_f3maxblk = 128 before connecting to the 
database.
This setting effects the amount of memory that is allocated to doing indexed 
operations.  I am not sure if it will effect inserts or not.

You might want to try setting your qualcols from 2 to 10.  This will change 
the database from row locking to page locking, and quite often will improve 
performance.

A few minutes for an insert, this really sounds like a network problem 
possably having something to do with file sharing???  Is it an insert of 
values, or are you selecting information from another table for the insert?
