Javier's right. I looked back at some messages that were formatted in HTML, possibly by the process of replying to an HTML message. In a typical example, the message itself had only 60 words in it. However, MS Outlook basically builds an entire complicated HTML/CSS Style sheet, and sends that along with the message. And then it applies those styles over and over again to virtually every line in the message, including both the new message, and the quoted message. The bottom line was that the 60 word message to the list was 10kB large. The obvious solution is that there should be no HTML messages on the list to reply to! So if everybody follows Bernie Lis' advice, a lot fewer messages will be bounced or unreadable.
