Jim,

I fought this as part of the network problem here, and I kept having
printeres fall off the net, show as offline, then come back on when nothing
changed, and sometimes I couldn't get them to show as connected at all. I
couldn't print a complete page from any windows machine, and couldn't copy a
Dos report to the printer without a LONG wait. I called HP Tech Support, and
this was their solution. To them, with a Jet Direct External Print Server,
this is known to them.

Under the HP Jet Admin, or the IP Address under Internet Explorer, find the
server, and then the printer.

Configuration, Device

Parallel Mode - Set to - Bi-Directional (JetDirect EX)

Parallel Handshaking - Set to - nACK and Busy

Balance of settings remain as is.

I got this from HP Tech Support concerning Okidata Printers. I fought it
too, and called them, and they are aware of the situation, but Okidata says
there isn't a problem. I found it was, and this was the fix with the Okidata
ML320 / ML 520 series. I can't promise any solutions, but I know it fixed it
for my servers
