Javier,

        The Zebra barcoding 'wedge', a handheld scanner,
plugs between the keyboard and the system.  It works just as
you described.  On a laptop, since there is not a connector
between the computer and the keyboard, there used to be some
special considerations (I can't remember if it could be made
to work -- perhaps with an external keyboard installed...)
