Herb,

        Rather than periodically update table B, why don't
you create a view that combines the information from both
tables.   It will be automatically updated whenever you use
it.  You can run forms or print reports from the view, or
browse and edit the data.

        CREATE VIEW vwAB (InvDate, Field1, Field2) +
AS SELECT B.InvDate, A.Field1, A.Field2  +
FROM tableA A, tableB B +
WHERE (A.InvDate = B.InvDate)

        This will put every column of data that you include
in your field definition from Table A together with whatever
has the corresponding InvDate from Table B.  (You will want
to make sure that the InvDate is unique in Table A, and also
unique in Table B to prevent a cartesian product.  This
would also be necessary if you wish to 'populate the column
"InvDate" in Table -B- with the data permanently...")
