Stan:

There's nothing special about the pipe character in this case -- I just
chose it as something that was unlikely to occur in Duey's data.  The tilde
character is good also.  I probably wouldn't use this technique in my code,
both because it's NOT guaranteed to be correct (if the separator character
occurs in the data) and because I like the separate table method better.
