Emmitt:

And now we have your opinion to stay with 3 front ends.  I understand now why I would have to convert every 6.5++ form and report to 7.1, because of course it would be looking in the sys_xxx3 tables.  So you're right, that's a bit of work.  Then I would also have to go thru and replace all those writes to the screen of the windows apps.  That's a fair chunk of work.  I'll put it to the client and see what they prefer.  I myself don't have a problem with starting with 3 front ends, soon to be 2 front ends once the DOS piece is converted, then they could go to 1 front end if they want to "merge" 6.5+ and 7.1.

My recommendation would be to keep running what you are now while you convert.  I understand the reluctance to be maintaining 3 versions, but that somehow seems like the path of lesser difficulty.  Shoe-horning the 6.5++ Windows forms and reports into 7.1 may end up costing more effort than doing an orderly conversion/rewrite.

That's the approach we are taking.  All new work is in 7.1, and as we have time we will convert (more likely rewrite) the 6.5 stuff.  And we do have some 6.5++ DOS running a payroll piece that will probably never be converted.
