Karen:

When I upgraded the application from DOS 4.5++ to Windows 6.5++ I had users running both applications at the same time, they simply opened one window with the DOS application and one window with the 6.5++ Windows application, as more modules were converted the windows application grew and eventually they both had the exact same functionality and then we took out the old DOS application out.

I am now going through the same process upgrading from 6.5++ Windows to 7.1; users have both applications running simultaneously and eventually we will phase out the 6.5++ all together. I no longer do any new development work on 6.5, if a new feature is needed, I implement it in 7.1 and since the user has access to both versions, it has not been a problem. Once users start working on 7.1 it is hard to get them to go back to 6.5++.

Javier:

I know that you're right, but the problem is that this client is going to pay me to convert a huge 6.5++ DOS app to 7.1.  They're choking on the cost of that, so I'm hoping that the 6.5++ Windows app can stay as it is with as little modification as possible, just run from 7.1 so that we can get rid of a different icon to bring up that app.  I'm sure as soon as they see 7.1 in action they will want the Windows app converted also.

Karen

After doing an extensive conversion of a 6.5++ Windows application to 7.1, I would recommend that you create the forms from scratch as there are so many new features that trying to adapt a converted form is IMHO a waste of time;
