I hate these sort of problems - and I don't think this one was anything to
do with R:Base - but it's gone back to working properly now.

I've just gone back to change the link that I set to "maximise" yesterday
which got R:Base back for me and somehow it has changed itself back to
"normal window" - which, of course, makes sense to get R:Base back to how I
had it before. And, yes, I did re-boot, numerous times, warm and cold
yesterday. Very odd and just the sort of thing that makes you look strangely
at a user who tells you that's what happened.

I suppose I should have thought it out for myself but using the -a switch
for betas/normal would be much more sensible. I've been holding off the
latest one so as not to interfere with what I was in the middle of, so
thanks for that.
