Cassette hubs have the drive side bearings further out than freewheel hubs.
There's a wider range of choices in cassettes beyond 7 speeds. Current
cassettes are retained with a lock ring that doesn't continue to tighten up.
The original UG cassettes used a threaded small cog that got tighter as it
was ridden. Screw-on freewheels were even more problematic as they got the
full brunt of low gear, hill climbing force applied to tighten them on.

They both work fine - the chain doesn't know what it's on.

Subject: [RBW] cassettes vs freewheels

If this has been discussed previously, I'll be happy to be referred to
the archives.

what's the functional differences between cassettes and freewheels?
I'm looking at wheels on riv's site and I can't figure out what I'd be
gaining or losing with one or the other.

thanks,
-sv
