D'you mean, "as far from the seat tube"? Put the chain on the smallest combination and cut it as long as you can get away with.
The Campy 1010s on the '03 annoyingly put the axle right in the middle of the dropout on the smaller combo, meaning that only half the dropout length was available for the axle's forward movement in the bigger combo -- thus limiting the cog spread to 2 teeth. I did some energetic work with a large rattail file and, dammit, made the thing work for at least 3 and probably 4 teeth. (Similar work long ago on the short horizontals that were Riv's original default, putting the chain at the back of the slot in the 46/15, let's me *just* use a 46/20, and I daresay that the modified '03 may allow 5 teeth now. Interesting: on the gofast, when my chain gets just about to the replacement wear mark on a Park Chain Checker, there is no longer room to take up all of the slack. I could fix this with a few swipes of the file.) It takes *very* little metal filed off horizontally to take up considerable chain slack.
