Today I was wondrously surprised to feel well enough to try a ride (yesterday
was a hard brain day). I improved enough as I went, especially once I was
heading away from the "big city" of Woodland Park after 6 miles.

There is an amazing flow to single speed not found with a derailured bike.
Silent running. Smooth. Efficient. Poser mode gives a nice taste, but it's like
the difference between Dewar's and 24 year old Ardbeg.

I made the back dirt road that winds its way on the ridge north of Rampart
Reservoir, then dropped down to the Reservoir where we often camp, and took the
single track around the reservoir. Again, the flow of single speed, not having
to think about shifting or the drivetrain, but just pedal, is wondrously
freeing.

Went around to the Waldo Canyon burn area on the South side of the Reservoir.
We were evacuated for 10 days nearly two years ago for that fire and it hits
literally close to home just how hot it was and how close it came to our wee
town (and so many in the Springs did lose their homes). I fitting
contemplative ride through the burn area on a single speed on single track that
invites contemplative prayer.
