I was thinking of retrofitting my Shimano cantis on the Soma GR with
the MTB type pads but I guess if I do that, they won't clear the fork?
 I'm running 38mm Compass Loup Loups so maybe they aren't wide enough
to cause an issue, dunno.

Reason I want to replace the stock pads is that the stopping power is
pathetic with them...granted they are the CT91 so maybe that's a
factor also.  Hey, they were less than $20 for a whole bike's worth
and they look nice!.

I took the bike to the top of the mountain on the east side of San
Jose, CA when I was out there (Tully Rd) and descending was positively
scary.
