It's a long time since high school physics for me, but I think any "upwards" force the cable exerts on the straddle wire is going to be felt as "downwards" force by the cable stop. Ted's comment sums up my concern... hmm, I think you've talked me out of it.
Now I just have to decide whether to spend €40 on a Funky Monkey or put up with sub-optimal seatpost clamping.
