My best friend is incredibly cheap, and has a fondness for rescuing
bikes from the trash. Last time we went on an overnight, he showed up
with a dumpster bike with a chain that seemed entirely made of rust,
and a freewheel that no longer freewheeled so he was riding a fixie,
not that great for dirt uphills and downhills. However, he's a good
rider and a brilliant mechanic, so he made the dumpster bike work.

Now he has Dumpster II. Friday he called and said he'd found this bike
and patched it up-- a Bridgestone MB-2. Hey, said me, that's a good
frame! We were supposed to do another overnight this weekend but it
was raining and I'm sick, so we postponed until next weekend. Good
thing, because he discovered yesterday on a ride that Dumpster II has
a broken chainstay. This did not prevent my friend from riding it up
to Skyline and down again, because he is crazy.

So, how hard would it be for my friend to replace the chainstay
himself, and would it be worth it to pay to have the chainstay
replaced?

It isn't a contest. Enjoy the ride.
