If riding without a helmet is his joy, then let him have it. There's only so much changing of hearts and minds you're going to do on an email list. I take a risk riding my bike also, for a different health related reason I'm not going to get into here, but it would leave my life so much more empty if I could not ride, that it's worth it to me to take the risk.
