1st off, you did the right thing taking the lane in that situation. 

When I'm on my game, I try to follow the golden rule, to avoid road rage, 
don't engage. Sometimes easier said then done. Good idea to always keep 
both hands on the bars, least someone confuses your gesture. I smile when 
someone does the right thing and I shake my head left to right when they 
don't.
