+1 on the small Canon cameras. I have one of those (SD 780 IS), and I carry it
on the bike more than I do my Canon S95. The S95 takes better photos, but the
SD780 is easy to use, smaller, and doesn’t cost as much—which means that if
drop it while I’m riding I’m out about far less money for a new camera.

Regarding iPhones—I have an iPhone and an iPod Touch (which also takes nice
photos and videos). I haven’t been able to use them successfully for
on-the-bike photos. Both suffer from the same problem: You have to give a lot
of attention to the device to get it out of your jersey pocket or handlebar
bag, turn it on, compose the photo, and shoot. You can’t do it without looking,
given the need to swipe across the screen to turn it on, get the Camera app
started, etc. Compare that with most dedicated digital cameras, which are easy
to operate by feel.

The iPhone and iPod are both great cameras, but they don’t work well for me
while riding. If you take most of your photos while stopped, they would
probably work quite well.

I often bring my Garmin VIRB camera to shoot video. It will take still photos,
but they’re not as good as what you’ll get from a decent digital camera.
