Mechanical disks are at least (I think that's true) as simple and reliable
as calipers and cantis and V brakes. All have problems -- mine, with Avid
BB7s, is that little forces bend the disks so that they very, very light
rub -- "whisk, whisk, whisk" -- but this has been a aproblem only when
moving the wheel about, not while riding. The Avids don't modulate as well
as the best cantis I've used, but they modulate as well as V brakes, IME.

I recall once, with a flat, somehow knocking a pad (held in place by a
spring) off the caliper and into the dirt, but I found it and it was easy
to stick back in -- and they're very small to carry.

But the real reason I like disk brakes for dirt is not for the brake but
for the rim:

1. You can use a 425 gram, 30 mm rim that is sturdy enough for off road;
2. You don't grind the braking surfaces of your expensive rims with your
brake pads.

Note that if you choose 1, you automatically get 2, 'cuz 1 don't have brake
tracks.
