By STI, I'm guessing you mean integrated shifters and brake levers? If so, my dated experience with 9-speed STI and a 46t chain ring was that front derailleur shifting was poor and the drive train was plagued with constant noise. After several mechanics could not fix the problem, switching to a 48t chain ring helped quite a bit.
