Indeed - I keep my Flickr subscription partially out of habit. But, even
with all the "improvements" it still does a fine job. Yahoo ownership a
minus. All the folks who I've been there with for the past (mumble-mumble)
years a significant plus. Flickr has become the old bike shop on the back
street where the good stuff is, while Instagram is on the main square and
all the cool kids hang out there. I like both, but they are different.

There have been some changes to google photos, with hints of automatic
uploading and such (all of which using the Google+ tools, it sounds like).
Since so much of my photo-taking is via the phone, it does seem to be an
option.

Playing with IFTTT for some clients, and we got photos moving and sharing
well between dropbox folders and flickr, instagram and others. That's a
helpful tool, if only for giving you a backup archive for images.

I've also seen some tools for migrating from Flickr, most of which seem
pretty manual. But the functionality is there within Flickr to archive all
of your images locally - and then you can repost elsewhere.
