I do that with the Rock Bros pants, which I daresay are made from material
no heavier than those knickers. But if I go to the expense of buying
knickers, it will be for cold weather, and I'd like a heavier fabric,
preferably a stout nylon canvas.

For hot weather, the Rapha Randonee shorts are perfect: comfortable, long
but don't cover the knee, so cooler, but look sufficiently dressy that I
can wear them at most places where I ride to. Worst case, they are cool
enough that I can easily slip a lightweight pair of long pants over them --
I'd rather take that approach to hot weather riding.
