I'd echo Bill, i also have a early canti SH, i max out at 38-40mm with 48mm fenders--and most people would not find the clearances acceptable. i have Berthoud fenders on another bike and i think you could push a little more than other fenders of similiar size, but i'd not try anything bigger than 40mm and even then i think you are pushing it.
