Interesting, Justin. I have a SunRace 8-speed thumbie which I'm also not thrilled with. It indexes fine, but the action is too hard. Sometimes I have to grab the thing with my whole hand to get the shift. I've used Shimano indexed bar-cons in both positions, and they're definitely softer/easier/better.
