I use some cheapo click-but-don't-index Sunrace shifters I got from Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B007QMJH86?vs=1) on my late 80s Rockhopper adventure/mtb. I absolutely love them and prefer them to the Shimano Ultegras on my Sam, which I also run in friction mode. I love the clicks! As far as reliability goes, it's still early on, but for $8-10 a pair, they're a decent bet for a non-top-of-the-line steed, and they performed well during a recent three day bikepacking excursion on the VA MTB Trail.
Digression aside, hope you get yours sorted out! I'm excited to try them out this weekend on my buddy's Clem that he bought from a list member.
