I vote with your daughters. I love the back a bike bags. I don't know if you can beat the ease of frequent access. I have found mine to be a real pleasure to use multiple times each day--love the toggles! I don't know that the buckles and belts and what have you on other panniers would be more or less likely to snag in the brush. I have not had issues with water, though I do not do the kind of riding you do.
