Per Brooks over on the Retrogrouch blog: *"When using clincher tires, the tire labels should be lined up with the valve stem. That's not just an aesthetic affectation -- it can help when it comes time to locate and fix a punctured tire... Labels should be visible/readable from the drive side of the bike."* -- http://bikeretrogrouch.blogspot.com/2016/11/retrogrouch-rules-proper-bike-setup.html
That lines up with what I was taught at my LBS many moons ago, and what I have done ever since. Because I'm pedantic and some tire labels run for several inches these days, I personally line the valve stem up with whatever aspect of the label seems to best qualify as a "logo". On Compass tires, that's the blue oval that says Compass in it. On Paselas I go the thing shaped like two swoopy parenthesis.
