Reluctantly dipping my toe in here...so Garth, I take it you are advocating for the "the Universe will fix it" school of bike mechanics. I've tried that myself from time to time, but I generally end up with broken and noisy bicycles--entropy and all that. I'm assuming you have better connections. Everybody's mileage varies.
