Chris, I've done the 1x9 on the San Marcos:

So I went with a 1x10 on a Box Dog Pelican before giving it to my girlfriend 1x10 Sunrace Cassette (11-40) Sugino crankset with Wolftoof 40t no drop chain on the "inside" of the 110bcd arms Shimano SLX 10 spd rear derailleur Gevenalle GX - Shifters, I got the short pull version The Gevenalle shifters use the microshifters that are for 10 speed Shimano MTB rear derailleurs. Index flawlessly, and have a larger throw so friction is also easy (YMMV). Very no-fuss set up.
