There a couple of threads at the moment which touch on sensitivity of set up in terms of comfort/handling/performance of upright vs sportier cockpits. I have tried a variety of set ups on my bike (not a Riv) from drops (at saddle height) through Bosco-style (very upright) and Albatross. Although I've settled on the Albatross set up I don't think there were major flaws with any of these combos and I've never been able to mess up the handling to the point of "disconcerting". I guess I've just been lucky where others seem to have to play around to get just the right bar height, reach, angle, etc.
