Esteban,

When it is really nasty or if the offroad route in is passable I
commute on my single speed mtb with fat studded tires on it:

It is geared at 32-20.
I also have stud shod raleigh twenty and surly big dummy for when it
is merely icy or mildly snowy. Neither do well in fresh snow or very
icy conditions. The low geared mtb is the way to go. I have a freddies
revengze light up front and a schwalbe ice spiker on the back, which
are the fattest studded tires available. I can't quite get fenders on
the back with these tires, but I am working on wedging some clamp on
fenders over the chainstay bridge so I can avoid the heartbreak of
backspackle and avoid getting them snowpacked.

I do feel lucky that my short commute is scenic and fun, even when the
weather is really bad. It never takes me more than an hour to get the
3 miles home (which is pretty much my walking time, 45minutes was my
slowest bike commute), even when there is a foot of snow and it takes
my neighbors well over an hour (often more like 2) when they let work
off early.

Enjoy the free water from the sky.

Tarik
