Bike shops here sell generic housing for about $1 per foot, and cables for about $3. From my experience, generic housing and cables work fine for calipers and V brakes; I haven't had much success setting up cantis for drop bar levers, and I can't tell if my poor results would be improved by better housing or if the cause is something else.
$44 would buy a lot of bulk generic housing and cables.
