I bought a roll of metallic braid cable housing a few years ago from VO. I
try a lot of different handlebar/bike combinations, but now I always have a
piece of housing that is long enough for any brake or non-indexed
derailleur job - even the really long one for the drag brake on the HHH or
the rear drum on the Guv'nor. Probably last me the rest of my life - it is
bike shop quantity (30 meters), but I have a bike shop number of bikes. I
keep the housing and cables that I take off and they just get shorter over
time - rear cables and housing become front cables and housing. It was a
fair chunk of change up front, but I have never regretted doing it.
