Thanks, Davey. That makes a whole lot of sense. I ended up going a different direction, thanks to an extraordinary (and totally unexpected) deal on a city/light cargo bike that meets all of my utilitarian needs to the letter.
The savings were such that a second bike for recreational "needs"...the longer, faster weekend road rides and whatnot...is totally feasible. And easily justified.
