that may be the whole difference.  You would think that many hammered 
facets would provide stiffness, but maybe they just change the natural 
frequency (i.e., pitch).  
No offense to anyone, but I've never liked the look of hammered fenders - 
though they probably age more gracefully - mine show surface oxidation, 
burnishes, scratches, etc.
