Different application, same idea: I have cut up old Rubbermaid tubs the handles broke off of and my wife was happy to see turn into insole stiffeners to make minimalist running shoes into stiffish soled cycling shoes. Leather layer on top and good to go. Still puzzling out if there is a stiffer, yet still thin and light sheet of _____ out there, but until then, this works great.
