Like Brett I'm also part of the PDXcoffeeoutside meet-up (though during the
school year infrequently because off route for my bike commute.) The thing
about CoffeeOutside is the *Ritual*. In cultures where coffee or tea
preparation is historical, it's ritualized, and one of the things I
appreciate about the PDX scene is a return to the communal, ritual aspect
of sharing the whole experience. The fire in whatever form, grinding the
coffee, the food brought and shared, the conversation, being outside
greeting the rising sun... All that is far more important than method of
preparation.

That said, In this particular forum aren't bike bags sort of ubiquitous?
Why would you have a bike bag if not to carry the brew kit?!? I've got
about 4 different stoves I rotate through depending on my whim. Not to be
sexist, but in my experience the method of creating a fire seems to be more
important to guys. My homemade alcohol stove is simplicity itself and the
fuel can be carried in a pop can. Isobutane cannister stoves, especially
with piezo igniters are quick and nearly idiot-proof, but for quality of
flame and BTU it's hard to beat white gas. And Stove Envy is a thing. One
member of our group recently scored an old Optimus 8R white gas stove -
that was my first backpacking stove in 78 when I purchased with one of my
first paychecks at Yellowstone Nordic in West Yellowstone the summer I
worked at Old Faithful - and I sorely regret ever selling it. I'm also
really intrigued by the speed and efficiency of another member's MSR
Windburner stove which boils water in under 2 minutes.

One other thing. I'm an admitted snob about it, but quality of beans is
paramount to my enjoyment. But a bad cup of coffeeoutside beats most coffee
inside any day.

PDXcoffeeoutside is the IG group name, btw.
