To be clear (I wasn't), I was trying to answer Patrick the Deacon's questions from the perspective of how that stuff got to be on mountain bikes as the niche developed, not specifically why Riv is doing it now.
I've had plenty of threaded headsets come loose over the years, but never a Riv headset over 15 years of owning/riding them, and I used to ride some gnarly singletrack at China Camp, Marin County on my Romulus.
