I have and enjoy both. Friction is more “classic,” and requires a bit of 
finesse and thinking … something like shooting a manual camera. Indexing is 
easier to shift (think of an automatic point-and-shoot camera). Some prefer the 
added control.

Theoretically, indexed shift levers are more likely to fail, due to the small 
parts inside. In practice, I’ve never had a pair of indexed levers malfunction.

One plus for indexed shifting is that when you’re tired, or are struggling 
uphill and trying to find a lower gear, it’s nice to just move the lever and 
wait for the click.
