Wow. My Brooks Pro on my Riv was purchased in 1976 or 1977 and has
not yet turned into an @55 hatchet. I have weighed around 200 lbs
throughout that time (up to 250 about 20 years ago, but let's face
it, I obviously wasn't riding much then...).
But in those days the Pro's leather was twice as thick as the B.17
and more carefully chosen. It looks to me like the current Pros and
B.17 are cut from the same leather and it is treated differently than
the old days. My Pro was hard as oak for years and took about 3
years to fully break in. Now it's just the most comfortable saddle I
have ever ridden. The leather is about 1/4" thick. I've got one
other Pro from that era and it, too, is very comfortable. My newer
Pros aren't as good- the leather is too soft and stretches too much.
I have a titanium Swift which has really hard leather like the old
ones but the shape is different and very uncomfortable for me.
So I am getting around to suggesting looking for an old, possibly
NOS, Brooks saddle- probably a Pro unless it's just too narrow.
