George, Drilling out the pins to expose the holes already present won't 
matter at all. Those holes are nothing compared to "back in the day" with 
the drillium craze !  The 60's weight weenies dream.

The pins and ramps are called "shift aides" by manufacturers. It's a rather 
self serving thing, that indexed shifting needs "aides" to help move the 
chain. Anyone that knows how to friction shift knows they are not needed.
