I'm not a constant index fiddler and my tandem indexes fine, too.

Indexing is really not that difficult to deal with, especially with
barends. There just little spots where the shifter will stop when you
move it. That's it.

those spots are very precise distances from one another and they
correspond strongly to the amount of cable necessary to move the
derailler to the next cog.

as a general rule - if you have top and bottom right and you aren't
playing any silly games to make it all work then indexing just works
once you get your cable tension right.

I have no problem with friction shifting, none at all, and for certain
types of bikes I prefer it - but I don't think indexed levers are a
terrible thing.
