It has been decades since I last wore warm-weather cycling gloves or a wristwatch, but I do recall the “badges of honor” — the startling* dark brown patch mid-back-hand against white skin covered by gloves, and the fish-belly white ring around the coffee brown left wrist. Now I’m uniformly brown from fingertips to sleeves, at least on the top side of my arms. I have half Filipino and half Anglo/Scots Irish skin that is very light when covered but gets very dark when exposed to mile-high sun, like thermal printing paper. My wrists are several magnitudes darker than my ankles.
Funny, it was my lily-white pure-WASP father who sunbathed outside in the equatorial, mile-high African sun at mid day and gardened in retirement in short sleeves on Albuquerque summer afternoons — no damned suncreen for him (or me); he developed only occasional minor growths which he’d have removed every year or 2. Linen: I have exactly 1 linen dress shirt that I often choose to ride to church in during seasonal transitions, and it’s comfortable, but I can’t say that it’s more comfortable or stinks less after several rides than 100% cotton shirts cut generously but not baggy. What I have found very comfortable in very hot weather is rayon, as in big, baggy Hawaiian shirts; tho’ I’ve since discovered that lightish wool — Wabi Woolen ss jersey bought 1 size big, and an old Italian non-merino wool ss jersey — is fine up to 98*F (tested to this temp, may be comfortable ever hotter) at least in our low humidity climate. * One person who saw it when I removed my goves gasped, “Whoa!” Patrick Moore, who has never been tempted to shave his legs, in ABQ, NM On Sun, May 11, 2025 at 6:37 PM Leah Peterson <[email protected]> wrote: > Meanwhile, I’ve got some serious style of my own over here.
